Gynecology

‍PROMOTING FEMALE HEALTH AT EVERY STAGE

General gynecology focuses on the everyday health concerns women may experience across all stages of life from adolescence through menopause and beyond. Many gynecologic symptoms are common and often benign, but understanding what's normal (and when to seek care) is an important part of maintaining long-term health.

Menstrual Cycles

Menstrual cycles are often irregular during the first one to two years after the onset of menstruation. During this time, cycles are frequently anovulatory, meaning ovulation does not occur and the luteal phase may not develop normally. These early irregularities are typically a normal part of reproductive maturation.

Breast Health

Breast pain, also known as mastalgia, refers to tenderness or discomfort in one or both breasts. It can occur at any stage of life and may or may not be related to the menstrual cycle. While breast pain can be uncomfortable, it is not necessarily a sign of a serious condition and is often benign.

Ovarian Cysts and Masses

Ovarian cysts and masses are common findings in women of all ages. The vast majority are benign and may resolve on their own. When identified, your provider will determine whether monitoring or further evaluation is appropriate based on symptoms, imaging, and individual risk factors.

Vaginal Health

Despite common advertising messages, there is no medical benefit to routine douching. The vagina is self-cleansing, and douching can disrupt its natural balance, increasing the risk of irritation and infection.

Vaginitis is a general term used to describe inflammation or infection of the vagina. Symptoms such as itching, discharge, odor, or irritation are common, and most women will experience at least one episode of vaginitis during their lifetime. Effective treatments are available once the underlying cause is identified.

Cervical Cancer Screening

The Pap test examines cells collected from the cervix and vagina to screen for infection, inflammation, abnormal cell changes, or cervical cancer. Regular screening plays a key role in early detection and prevention.

Skin and Vulvar Concerns

Sebaceous cysts are benign, slow-growing bumps that contain dead skin cells and natural skin oils. They can occur anywhere on the body, including the vulvar region, and are typically harmless. Evaluation is recommended if a cyst becomes painful, infected, or changes in appearance.

Postmenopausal Bleeding

Any vaginal or genital bleeding after menopause is considered abnormal unless it is clearly related to hormone replacement therapy. Postmenopausal bleeding should always be evaluated promptly to determine the cause and ensure appropriate care.
